What does the lens model code mean?

The numbers identify key optical characteristics. The suffix describes the configuration and control system, which can change accessory compatibility.

Canon families: CJ is 4K ENG / EFP, HJ is HD ENG / EFP, UJ is UHD BOX and XJ is HD BOX. Check the individual product specification: the published telephoto endpoint may be rounded and should come from the manufacturer’s table.

For example, HJ22ex7.6B IRSE A has manual focus; IASE A has servo / manual focus. Both have servo / manual zoom. Shortening the name to “HJ22” loses this distinction.

RD · U
Servo zoom / focus; OS-TECH drive

In ENG / EFP codes, RM means servo zoom with manual focus; RD means servo zoom and focus. HD families include HA Premier, ZA Select and XA eXceed. In BOX codes, SM indicates interchangeable servo / manual modules; ENG drive-code rules do not apply to it.

A letter’s meaning depends on its position and lens family. Newer drives, regional versions and BOX mounting systems have additional suffixes. We do not order parts or controls from a shortened model code alone.
